Math Department's Problem of the week.

The Fall 2008 prize &dlquo;Blockus Duo&drquo;
The Spring 2009 prize &dlquo;Set

The &dlquo;Problem of the Week&drquo; is meant to be a fun weekly event that people from across Dordt's Campus may participate in. However, Math, Computer Science, Engineering and other science types are particularly encouraged to participate. Some problems are more challenging than others. Enjoy them all.

You have ONE week from the posting of the problem to submit a solution. Please submit your neatly written solutions to Dr. Gary De Young by noon of the due date. Problems where no solution have been submitted will remain open until a solution is submitted.

From the correct solutions submitted over the semester an &dlquo;Honored Successful Solver&drquo; will be chosen from a hat where their name has been added the same number of times that they submitted correct solutions. The prize &dlquo;Honored Successful Solver&drquo; for the Fall 2009 is a &dlquo;Blockus Duo&drquo; game and for the Spring 2010 the prize is a mathematical/logical card game called &dlquo;Set.&drquo; Both games may be played with in the Mathematics/Computer Science Student lounge (please don't remove the games). Faculty may submit solutions, but they will only be added to the &dlquo;Successful Solver&drquo; list if no correct student or staff solution is submitted for a given problem.

When I remember hard copies of the problems will be posted near my office door (CL 187).

While viewing the problems on the web a warning message concerning fonts may appear at the top of the page if the page contains mathematical symbols. You may ignore the message or download and install the fonts on your computer. Using the TeX fonts will insure proper printing of the mathematical equations and symbols if they are present on the page.
