Math 293: Problem Solving Seminar.
Solving problems effectively is difficult; however, your skill will improve as you gain mathematical knowledge and problem solving experience.
One part of experience is learning different ways that you can approach problems that have been shown to be successful in the past and to be creative while practicing, practicing and practicing. Mathematical knowledge depends on your courses work and your curiosity.
This course is intended to prepare you for taking the Putnam examination. Last year there were over 4000 students who took the Putnam examine! About 3000 scored two point or less from a total possible of 120. It does not have to be that way The vast majority of the problem are simple when viewed from the correct perspective. Coming up with the perspective is what is hard. We will examine several problem solving techniques and common ways to recast problems to aid you in your creative search perspectives.
One last note in real problem solving solutions come in spurts and sputters; thus, patients is a very good thing to practice when you become frustrated. Also there will be times that you may feel that you don't have enough mathematical knowledge to work with, but over time (years not semesters) your skills will improve if you keep practicing problem solving.
