Student Project Ideas
If you are a student at Dordt in Mathematics, Computer Science or any other area and would like an idea for a research topic I have a two ideas. If any of the ideas below intrigue you please contact me.
- Sudoku and Scheduling: Sudoku is the popular number puzzle that some attribute to Euler (at least the idea of the puzzle). I believe that logical ideas used in solving Sudoku can be used in making constrained scheduling programs more efficient. I have been working on a sports league scheduler for Edmonton Little League so I have real data for difficult constrained scheduling problems. Any method that is developed will have a very real possibility of being used! Programing skills are required for this project preferably perl or php.
- Modeling the Effectiveness of Terrorism: I recently sat through a presentation on modeling the effects of fear in a population where you have the Mob, the Police and the Population. It stuck me it would be interesting to model tactics of terrorism and counter terrorism in spread fear or assurance through a population. This project is wide open and could go in many directions.
